Nearly 5,000 spectators gathered at Letná to watch the men’s final of the Boulder World Cup, where the world’s best climbers put on a dramatic show. It seemed like a Japanese victory was on the horizon for a long time, but Sorato Anraku only managed to secure a zone on the final boulder, and last year’s champion, Dohyun Lee from South Korea, successfully defended his title.
The finalists faced tough challenges, especially on the second and third boulders, where none of the climbers managed to top. What secured Lee's victory was that he was the only climber to achieve at least a zone on every boulder.
"I really like Prague. Some of the final routes were difficult for me, but I gave my all. I really enjoyed the atmosphere here," said the happy winner.
The favored Japanese climbers were left without a medal. Experienced Frenchman Manuel Cornu claimed silver, and Olympic champion Toby Roberts from Great Britain took home the bronze. Local hero Adam Ondra thrilled the Czech fans with a top on the last boulder, but he couldn’t move up from sixth place, failing to defend last year’s silver.
"It’s a huge experience to climb in front of a home crowd, and I’m really happy that I was able to give the fans a top on the last boulder," Ondra commented on the final.
On Sunday, the women will take to the wall at Letná. Their semifinal starts at 12:00.
